Student Activism in Hamilton’s 2SLGBTQ+ Archives is an undergraduate individual study project by Isabel Richards. The project aimed to illustrate the history of McMaster student engagement with resistance against homophobia. In considering this, I hoped to examine how student-led resistance (especially queer student activism) has changed over time. Through interviews with current student activists and consultation with Hamilton’s 2SLGBTQ+ Archives, I hope to think about the way that university students take on injustice in their schools and the broader communities they are located within.
Izzy Richards is a writer, reader, musician, and researcher currently studying in the Arts and Science program at McMaster. Inspired by her work as a caregiver for elderly individuals, position at McMaster University’s Okanagan Office of Health and Wellbeing working towards menstrual equity on campus, and research in Hamilton’s 2SLGBTQ+ archives, she is often thinking about fostering safe and inclusive communities, documenting the lives and experiences of others, and creating meaningful change.
